Elections will come and go and there will be skirmishes every once in a while - I look at them as waves, rarely will we have two markets/countries undergoing the same sort of thing going in Kenya,so when at Kenya your money is at the bottom of the wave, the cash at uganda should be right there at the top.... its not naive to assume that even the kenyan situation will improve, its more a matter of when, which means this is actually an opportunity for an investor presumable most of us are young, with young families,so any stocks you have will one day be worth quite a bit to someone if not soon,I hear land is dirt cheap at Tanzania,so how hard is it for a foreigner to own land there,or to start a company with a bunch of tanzanians buy 100 acres of land grow pineapples or whatever,....this is the kind of thing I am looking for....this are markets whose only way in terms of growth is up depending on which sector you target...unless you're very unlucky....over and over and over again:-)

Businesses of the current times [RichKing] Thursday, January 31, 2008 18:15
1. With coffin business you will certainly break even pretty soon.
2. Or a clinic or pharmacy if you are a doctor.
3. A security firm (to guard estates) would do as well.
I know someone is about to say I'm a joker.

Hedging [KulaRaha] Thursday, January 31, 2008 17:09
Most of us I'm sure had planned to expand our businesses this year,on the back of a wonderful 2007 ( minus 3 days). I had plans to expand, and take full advantage of the "growth expected in 2008".
That money is now losing value as our currency sinks and it sits idle earning 8% in a bank.
I think it is prudent to start looking regionally, but keeping an eye on election horizons ie only invest in a country that does not have elections in the next 3 to 4 years. That way you can be sure you will make money (God willing) and break even just before things "go wrong",if they do.

inlight of whats happening in kenya, proceed with caution. most african countries have the same issues we are dealing with and could explode anytime. rwanda and burundi are good examples. they inequalities/tribalism are there seriously. even UG has these issues

sometimes last year(or but one) the Rwanda governmt had a documentary on one the TV stations about investment oportunities there. they sounded very welcoming with licences/permit taking a day or so to get. cant really remember the actuals but they were very welcoming. one can as well enquire from their embassy at International Life Hse.

This is an important topic. [KulaRaha] Thursday, January 31, 2008 16:36
Friends, this is an important topic given the current state of the Kenyan economy.
Can anyone shed some light on business setup rules and reg in countries like UG,TZ,Rwanda,Mozambique etc?
I think diversification is important, and in this world of globalisation,we should all look at ourselves like MNCs. Therefore,we should have some limit of country risk, even though we stay here.
Even if the politicos agreed tomorrow, the economy would take at least 6 months to recover. That means we have 6 months to do our research and setup alternate places of operations as a hedge.
