SAFARICOM IPO start [GeorgeSoros] Monday, February 04, 2008 10:44
Until the crisis is resolved it may not be prudent for both the investors & govt to offer the IPO but given the Bean Counter's intellect he may just pull a suprise on us.

In 2 minds... [KulaRaha] Monday, February 04, 2008 08:37
Those who have read my earlier posts will know that I am a sceptical about this IPO,however,I have indicated I will invest in a BIG WAY!
What worries me here is that if we have this IPO anytime soon,it will be a bloodbath on the NSE. Counters already ravaged by the violence will drop even further,and will wipe out a fair chunk of investors funds.
Apart from this,I see this IPO not being truly oversubscribed. I have noted over the last 2 to 3 weeks that suddenly most savvy investors are looking to hedge their risk in Kenya. Most are looking for properties,business opps etc in the region. There has also been a fair amount of capital flight over the last month. A sudden reluactance to increase assets in Kenya is creeping over almost most wise players.
As for the truly retail investor,many are grappling with 18.2% inflation,with prices of basic commodities going up tremendously. This leaves little extra cash to invest,and given the market should tank upon the announcement,it leaves even less room to exit existing shares to buy Safcom.
I want Safcom to happen,but I sincerely beleive this is not the time to do it. That is the jewel in Kenya's crown,and selling it at the price of charcoal does not make any sense.
Business opportunities are like buses,there's always another one coming

SAFARICOM IPO start [3-Balls. You jus don't get it] Sunday, February 03, 2008 02:15
This IPO will be coming as early as June '08 If the spurts of violence subside immediately. At least that's the day that the treasury is quoting for best offer.
Always remember the main purposes of any listing are to: (In this exact order)
• encourage and achieve share ownership in by the public in accordance
with the Government of Kenya’s desire that we participate more fully in the
country’s wealth;
• afford institutional and individual investors the opportunity to participate directly in the
net income stream derived from the Company,as well as in the capital growth of its
assets;
• provide a ready and transparent basis for valuation of shares and,hence,
determination of the market value of the Company;
• obtain the necessary spread of shareholders to enable the listing of shares on
the NSE;
• enhance investor and general public awareness of shares;
• motivate and incentive employees via share ownership; and
• develop a wider shareholder base from which to raise funds for future expansion projects
Tucked in those many words,the Govt has somehting they like to sell,also happen they need a lot of money and preferably would love to raise it from Kenyans if possible to avoid debt.
PEACE

Safaricom IPO [emptydebes] Saturday, February 02, 2008 14:40
It should start like 5 minutes ago...!!
Then the market prices for other counters will go down even more since most retail buyers will sell their shares to buy the Safaricom IPO shares.
4instance,the Sasini Tea is a good buy since it was affected by the the fact that the coast auctions did not take place.
Also TPS(EA) Serena is a good buy since by Sept. 08...it will have shot to the 100+ price coz of the festive season.
invest wisely.....while uR @ it.
change the world,1 person @ a time.
